Ukulele lessons are fun for both kids and adults as it is easy to play. We start with fun pop songs students recognize from the first lesson. Because the ukulele is smaller than a guitar, it is great for kid’s small body size. The Ukulele has fewer strings than a guitar so we learn simple chord shapes quickly. Adults also love the ukulele’s simplicity and pure fun for playing favorite modern to classic pop and rock. Whether you’re interested in just playing at the beach, or have bigger plans, we will help you get to the level you want to be.

Here’s what a typical ukulele lesson looks like:

Warm-ups- Start each lesson with warming up, either a fun jam or just getting our fingers on the strings playing a warm-up exercise.  A good warm-up uses skills you clearly know and can do without much thinking. These warm-ups will be a starting point for practice at home.  The fun jam is another way to get started at home – or use after a practice session for reward.  Every lesson and practice should include fun along with growth.

Song work-All of our ukulele lessons use song work. The best way to learn is by playing the music that inspired you to play the uke in the first place! Don’t be intimidated if you are a beginner, songs like “Yellow Submarine” by the Beatles are easier to play than you think! You will be surprised at what you can play in your very first lesson! You get the whole song, and not just strum, we’ll help you say or sing the words and melody, too. You don’t need to be a “singer” to sing along. There are also recorded tracks for you to play along with many of our lessons.

Technique and Musicianship– To grow into a better musician, we will give you some skill building work that will help you hear what is working, and how it works. These take the form of exercises, scales, chord changing, and ear training practice. We will help you build your personal arsenal of techniques and skills that you can use to solo, improvise, and even compose your own music.

Music Theory– You will learn music theory through the song, technique, and style that you are currently working on in your ukulele lesson. To put it simply, we don’t just teach you HOW to play, but WHY it works. You will walk away with a rich understanding of music and the ability to play whatever is on your mind, with and without sheet music!

What to do when you are not here– one of the most difficult barriers to overcome while learning Ukulele and other instruments and singing is knowing exactly what to practice. Sure, they all say, “PRACTICE! PRACTICE! PRACTICE!” but what and how do you practice? At the end of our ukulele lessons, we will discuss what we learned along with why we learned it. We send you home with a plan showing exactly what you need to do at home and how to practice it before next week’s lesson so that you are constantly growing.
